In 2004, Congress mandated that all federally-funded schools observe “Constitution Day” with educational programs about the history and signing of the Constitution. Constitution Day is September 17, but if that date falls on a weekend, it may be observed any time around that date.
According to the guidelines put forth by the Department of Education, educators are free to design Constitution Day programming that best addresses the needs of their students.
The NH Bar Association, through the Center for Civic Education, provides an incredible opportunity to help teachers meet this federal mandate, through the "We the People...The Citizen and the Constitution" and "We the People...Project Citizen" programs.
Additionally, to help celebrate Constitution Day, newspapers serving New Hampshire schools and the state Supreme Court join together to sponsor an essay contest for students in grades 5-12. View the 2007 question and the state winners.
