Chief Justice John T. Broderick, Jr., in a letter to the Governor, argues that there is no room to make more cuts in the judicial budget.

The governor had request a 2 percent additional cut through Fiscal Year 2010 and an 8 percent cut in FY 2011. Chief Justice Broderick says that with 59 positions already unfilled, and reduced sessions through furloughs and other cutbacks, further cuts would result in significant layoffs. He said the measures required would have a "devastating effect" on the operation of the justice system.
Earlier, Broderick annnounced all courts will close on three Fridays - April 2, April 30 and May 28 -- in 1st round of cost-saving furloughs. Read Bar News article.

The Bar Association encourages members to contact us at nhbainfo@nhbar.org with examples of how budget cuts are affecting people in our legal system.

Why We Care is a series of pages with the latest information on the state's financial problems as they affect the courts. Also, there's advice on how Bar members can talk to neighbors and friends about the need for adequate funding for the justice system.
